Today I was watching the Oprah Show and the following quote was spoken "We shop to fill a void. We shop to bridge the gap between the person we are and the person we want to be." This may or may not be true, however it got me thinking. When I shop who am I trying to be? The words that automatically come to mind are, chic, elegant, classic and feminine all of this coming together to create "the baddest bitch".......lol. So my question to you all is: When you shop what key words come to mind and who are you trying to be? Now if your answer is "I shop for myself" dig deeper, because we are bombarded with influences and nothing we do is original, no matter how much we woulds like to believe it is.

I saw that episode today also, and not in all cases, but I do believe that I SOMETIMES shop to bridge the gap between who I am and who I want to be; but not in a 'negative, drive myself in dept for an outward persona' that hides the 'real me' kind of way. But moreso because I work towards being a better organized, well put together person and I want to project that energy into my life (via looking the part, lol), and in doing so I shop for a polished, classic, chic kind of look. While I'm a work in progress, I am starting to find and encounter happiness within myself, and I feel more comfortable with myself and my growth... And I don't have guilt around the ATTEMPT (lol) to show my inner self and growth in my outward relection (when my budget allows). I love that you posted this!
ReplyDeleteThis statement is probably more true then many realize, when I shop there are alway key words that come to mind like clean lines, polished, edgy, modern. These are words that I feel describe not only my style, but me. These words come to mind no weather it be fashion, art interiors etc.

I want to be successful. Thus, some of the things I buy are with a picture of someone who makes 180 grand a year[target salary; no where near at the moment] (I.E. 20 dollar cigars, dress shirts, pants, shades, hats, aged liquor, recliner, laptops and mac accessories). I think I'm learning restraint. However as my man Bun B notes if I don't flaunt it how do they know I got it. Nice stuff does set a tone for how people receive you, treat you, and work with you. Its a double edged sword
